Several items have to be taken into consideration when repairing or replacing teak decking. These include the design of the planking taking into account the shape of the vessels deck, plank width and depth, design of the margin planks, selection and quality of wood types, correct cut and dryness of the wood to avoid deformations and uneven wear, and the use of glues and caulking and all carried out by experienced personnel.
There are unfortunately many decks that due to lack of one of these points have a shorter life, or fail to be in keeping with the quality of the rest of the yacht. As with other parts of the yacht, the maintenance of the deck is a primary factor and should be kept in mind at the time of selecting cleaning products.
Attention must be given to rectify any damage as soon as possible, and correctly, to avoid expensive repairs at a later date.
Depending on the usage and the protective conditions it's normal that a deck loses 0.6 to 1mm in thickness per year. This in consequence means that a deck should be resoled every five to eight years, however some heavier deck constructions can last up to 16 years.
In total the yard have carried out some 30 deck projects in the last five years with a combination of traditional plank by plank and pre-fabrication methods.
