There can be many reasons for engine room refits and system modifications. The more obvious items include regular servicing of the main engines by official manufacturers agents. In some cases, i.e. MTU, the W6 service requires the complete removal of the main engines and transportation to the agent's workshop. This often requires the cutting of an access hole in the hull and removal of all the necessary pipe work and services in order to take the engine out and not damage the vessel by taking parts through the superstructure. Often the yacht's pipe work reaches the end of its life, this is especially the case with galvanised pipe in a saltwater environment. This can start as an occasional leak that can be patched up and may survive several years, but after a while the only solution is to replace the complete system.

Exhaust systems can also suffer and the harsh environment of hot salty water and corrosive gas starts to weaken the overall system, requiring either a patch up with higher quality and more resistant materials, or a system re-design. Whilst carrying out any of the above, it is an ideal opportunity to re-arrange and streamline piping and electrical systems which may have changed over the years, in many cases without removal of old systems. By their nature yacht's engine rooms and systems evolve, various changes and modifications are made as the years go by, and occasionally it makes sense to start again, removing all redundant pipe work and wiring.

The yard has also been involved in several complete engine room rebuilds where fire or flood damage has forced the stripping out of all the systems to repair the damage before replacing them. In many of these cases decisions were taken to upgrade and simplify the yachts engine room layout at the same time.

Depending on the usage of a yacht, the generator life span is finite and often dictated by how much time the yacht spends connected to shore power. Within 10 years it is very likely that a complete rebuild will be required. Most clients at this stage plan to replace the old units for new as technological improvements of engines over time; consumption, vibration, noise levels etc make it the far more economical option.
