Restoring Yachts

It all started with the restoration of Creole (1985 - 1987). The experience acquired by the yard during the construction of the 60m Schooner Jessica, two years earlier, proved very useful when carrying out the more complex task of restoring Creole. Her restoration had started in Italy in 1984 and since she was brought to the yard we have carried out a huge variety of work onboard including plank replacement, deck re-caulking and reconstruction of the masts.

This served to give Astilleros solid experience in the very specialised market of yacht restoration. This project spawned a succession of smaller contracts involving the same type of work, causing several of the yard staff to dedicate themselves to the special talents required when working on vintage yachts. The success of a quality restoration is through the correct combination of investigation, materials and construction methods, which have to be similar to those used during the manufacture of the vessel but using modern tools. None of this work would be possible without the personnel and craftsmen that understand the traditional techniques and have the knowledge to adapt them correctly to today’s world.

Restoration of the M/Y Babette.
Prior to starting this restoration, the question was raised as to the economic sense of spending money on the project in relation to the value and appeal of the vessel. The final result was a beautifully restored classic, at a price much less than a equivalent GRP yacht.

Astilleros Mallorca - restoring Hispania

The 15m class Yacht “Hispania” that had belonged to HRH Alfonso XIII, built in 1909. Hispania's restoration project, which started in 2004 at Astilleros de Mallorca, along with a cooperation agreement with Fairlie Restorations in the UK to re-build the hull, was aimed at the recovery of an historical vessel using building techniques and working methods of traditional craftsmanship.

One of the most interesting projects along side the restoration of “Hispania”, was the total rebuild of the Motoryacht “Blue Bird” built in 1938 for the speed ace Sir Malcolm Campbell. Delivered in spring 2007, she was rebuilt to Lloyd's and MCA compliance with collaboration of GL Watson & Co and interiors from Jon Bannenberg Ltd.
