Hispania Presented to the Public

August 2007

The Royal Fundation Hispania presents her most important project.

The presentation of the 15 m. S/Y HISPANIA.

On the 18th August 2007, surrounded by more than 60 yachts taking part in the Almirante Conde de Barcelona regatta in the bay of Palma, and with some 700 guests and local dignitaries looking on the spectacular presentation of the newly restored S/Y Hispania took place. This yacht designed by William Fife to the international 15m class rule was originally built in 1909 for His Majesty King Alfonso XIII of Spain.

In 1996 the Fundacion Hispania discovered and purchased her and, as with so many of her kind, she was in very poor condition after having being used as a house boat as she lay in the mud of an English creek.

The restoration project of Hispania began in 2004 and was carried out by ASTILLEROS DE MALLORCA beginning with the restoration of the hull at FAIRLIE RESTORATIONS in the UK after having entered into a co-operation agreement with them.

What is especially remarkable is the saloon, which still contains a large percentage of the yachts original furniture, and also the accuracy with which all involved with the project have followed Fifes original drawings thus maintaining the spirit and style of this truly superb racing vessel as she was at her original launch.

The Hispania has a length on the deck of 24m, a 4.20m beam and more than 400 square metres of sail area. Tuiga, her sister vessel, which belonged to the Duque de Medinacelli, was built at the same time in Scotland and now sails under the ensign of the Monaco Yacht Club. Seeing these two old friends racing in competition together again, as surely they will, is a moment that all involved in this heart warming project are waiting for and if yachts could talk, one has to wonder just what they would be saying to each other after all the years that they have been apart!
